This Isn’t Your Practice Life

For a long time, I lived like I was getting ready for something.

I figured the real stuff would come later. I’d travel more once things settled down. I’d slow down once I had enough. I’d spend more time on what mattered once the busy season ended. There was always a “once.”

I’m 51 now. And somewhere along the way it hit me: there’s no future version of me who finally gets to live. This is the life. Not a draft. Not a rehearsal. The only one I get.

I think most of us do this. We tell ourselves we’ll be happy after the next thing, the job, the house, the savings number, the kids growing up. Then we hit it, and a new “after” shows up.

I did that for years. I worked hard and built real things, and I’m proud of a lot of it. But I also spent a lot of time waiting. Waiting for the right moment. Waiting for someone to tell me it was okay to go live the way I wanted.

Nobody ever told me. Nobody tells anyone. You just decide.

That’s a big part of why I’ve been living in a van and spending my days in Baja making these videos. It’s not glamorous. Some days are hard, and some days I question all of it. But I picked it. And I have a feeling this chapter won’t look the same for much longer. Some things matter more than the road. Wherever it goes next, I’m not practicing for it. I’m in it.

I’m not telling anyone to sell everything and hit the road. That’s my path in this season.

What I’m asking is simpler… what are you putting off?

Maybe it’s calling someone you miss. Maybe it’s starting the project you keep bringing up. Maybe it’s just putting your phone down and actually being with the people in front of you.

It doesn’t need to be a grand gesture. It just needs to be real, and it needs to happen now.

So here’s my challenge. Today, do one thing like you mean it. Not as a test run. Not for practice.

This is your life. You only get the one.
